Designing for Black futures.

Over the weekend of July 18-19, 2020, I took part in the Design Caucus hackathon, with the challenge to design a solution that addresses socio-economic disparities in distance learning.

We asked ourselves, how might we standardize early childhood distance learning curriculums and build community to support underserved Black and Latinx new entrants to the public school system?

We built SchoolDay, a multi-dimensional early childhood education community transforming online learning to distance learning by leveraging open API integration, machine learning, and blockchain technology.

It was both cathartic and fun to design for Black futures with a team of like-minded friends. For team members Kenny Morifi-WinslowJasmine S. Young, Christopher Lee and I, the systemic problem is deeply personal. We have all been impacted by the visible and invisible barriers to education that Black communities face.

Check out SchoolDay’s pitch intro video, which was shot and edited by Brian Bon all within the 48hr hackathon period!
